My PhD project aims at analyzing actor strategies in the course of armed conflicts. I specifically attempt to identify the conditions under which combatants shift from armed force to nonviolent means of contention. For this purpose, I am currently compiling data on protest behavior in the context of India’s ongoing Maoist insurgency.

My PhD project aims to investigate from a civilian perspective (micro-level) and from an organizational perspective (meso-level) how mobilization and facilitation of nonviolent events is feasible in a civil war environment. To answer these questions, this project aims to establish a disaggregated quantitative dataset on nonviolent events during the Nepalese Civil War, timeframe 1996-2006.
